The CV Explained

People are often confused about the real reason that they need a CV, and put off the dreaded task of compiling their own for as long as they possibly can. The following points explain why it's so important to have a well-written CV, and how it can make you stand out from the crowd.

Why You Need a CV

A CV is usually used to make that all-important good first impression, and if written well, it should help you get past the first selection stage. But beware - the converse is also true - a badly written CV will eliminate you from the running immediately, before you even have a chance to discuss your skills and experience at interview.

The exercise of writing a CV can be a useful one for you, as it will fix in your mind your skills, achievements, work history and education.

Why the Company Wants a CV

Although companies are relying more and more on psychometric testing and assessment centres, the vast majority will still ask you to send in your CV. This is often because a CV is a good indicator of how much pride you take in your work, and lets the company see how you present yourself.

Proving You Have the Edge

One thing that people often don't realise when they are writing their C.V. is that it is very important to show that you are right for the job AND different enough to be worth interviewing. You need to demonstrate that you understand what the company is looking for and that you match up closely with the criteria they have set. You also need to show that you have an edge over the competition, and should be able to demonstrate where and how you are different or better.

Presenting the Information YOU Think is Important

CVs are as adaptable as you and your own circumstances need them to be. You can decide exactly what to present and how. All areas of your life and work can be introduced, keeping in mind that you still need to be tightly focused on the position you are applying for. Unlike an application form, a CV will allow you to present any information you deem appropriate, whilst leaving out anything irrelevant.
